Today's National School Walkout Day

Pramila Jayapal

byong,
Nineteen years ago, Columbine became a turning point in our nation's conversation on school safety. At the time it was an unprecedented event, and frankly, should have been a wake-up call for politicians to take up gun reform. However, as the years have gone by, school shootings are no longer a rare event and politicians are still turning a blind eye in favor of gun lobby dollars.
Our youth are saying enough is enough. They've shown their strength with last month's walkout and at March for Our Lives, but the Republican-controlled Congress and White House still refuse to seriously discuss sensible gun reform policies. Now, hundreds of thousands of students across the country are organizing for today's National School Walkout Day. They're not backing down and they won't give up.
This walkout is a day of action. Students are protesting, registering to vote, and calling their representatives. They're ready to vote out NRA puppet politicians who refuse to do their jobs to protect our nation from this public health crisis.
As an organizer and activist, I'm proud to see our nation's youth standing up against injustice and making their voices heard. These kids are smart, compassionate, and courageous. While their movement was sparked by school shootings, they're also raising awareness for everyday gun violence, particularly how it affects communities of color. It's amazing to see the connections that they're making and how steadfastly they're fighting.
The next generation of the resistance is here. We're living in dark times, but these kids are proof that there's light at the end of the tunnel.
In Solidarity,
Pramila Jayapal
